Elkhorn fire in Payette National Forest grows to 23,000 acres: River access and hiking trails affect

The Elkhorn Fire burning in the Payette National Forest is continuing to grow. The fire has burned nearly 23,000 acres. Due to fire activity, crews are not permitting boats to launch on the Salmon River from Corn Creek to Vinegar Creek until at least Wednesday.
On Tuesday, firefighters expect to improve the protection of structures in Whitewater Ranch and Yellow Pine Ranch. They hope to expand those efforts upriver to Artic Ranch, The River of No Return Ranch, and Artic Point Lookout, as well as downriver to China Bar.
Weather forecasts indicate there could be active fire behavior again on Tuesday.
People hiking in the area should check the status of trails as there are some closures.
A temporary flight restriction will be in place over the fire on Tuesday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
