Please don’t jump the gun on planning an expansion of Lahaina Harbor.

State Harbors Division take note: A similar idea was floated in the 1970s and failed due to Lahaina’s status as a National Historical Landmark, one of only 22 in the state.

The boundaries of this landmark extend a few miles off the shoreline of Lahaina to protect the Lahaina Roadstead from the whaling era.

The Department of the Interior has strict regulations pertaining to sites on the National Register. A lengthy hearing was held on Maui concerning the proposed harbor expansion and the necessary permissions from the U.S. Department of the Interior were denied.
